Media technology (MediaTech or mediatech) refers to new technology and innovation in media. The use of smartphones, internet, and emerging technologies such as cryptocurrency and AI are where we find the predominance of innovation today; the role of technology in media however can be traced back to the printing press, record player, microphone, and more. MediaTech companies consist of both startups and established Media and technology companies trying to replace or enhance the various forms of media through technology.

UNSW Adjuct Professor, Paul X. McCarthy reports that there are now more than twice as many private companies worth more than US$1 billion (also known as unicorns) in mediatech today (116) than as in the more well-known financial technology (fintech) sector (52).[1]
