Group Nine Media

Group Nine Media is a digital media holding company based in New York City, founded in 2016 by Ben Lerer. The company comprises Thrillist, NowThis, The Dodo, and Seeker which, along with a former brand Sourcefed, merged to form Group Nine Media in October 2016.

At the time of the merger, Discovery Communications announced a $100 million minority investment in the collective organization, becoming the biggest shareholder before Axel Springer.

Ben Lerer, founder of Thrillist and managing director of Lerer Hippeau Ventures, serves as CEO of Group Nine Media.

In 2019, Variety announced that Group Nine Media raised $50 million in new funding, led by its lead investor Discovery along with participation from German publishing firm Axel Springer. Group Nine says it has production deals with more than 20 TV channels and platforms including Discovery, Netflix, and Comedy Central.1
