AMC Theaters

AMC Theatres (an abbreviation for American Multi-Cinema) is a multi-nation-owned movie theater chain headquartered in Leawood, Kansas, and is the largest movie theater chain in the world. Founded in 1920, AMC has the largest share of the American theater market ahead of Cineworld and Cinemark Theatres.

After acquiring Odeon Cinemas, UCI Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas in 2016, it became the largest movie theater chain in both the world and the United States, with 2,200 screens in 244 theatres in Europe and over 8,200 screens in 661 theatres in the United States.

AMC operates among the most productive theatres in the United States’ top markets, having the #1 or #2 market share positions in 22 of the 25 largest metropolitan areas of the United States, including the top three markets (NY, LA, Chicago).

Adam Aron, who joined the company as CEO and President in 2016, has taken the Company to new heights, as AMC completed 2016 acquisitions of both Carmike Cinemas in the United States, and ODEON Cinemas, the largest theatre operator in Europe. Through its Odeon subsidiary AMC operates in 14 European countries and is the #1 theatre chain in Estonia, Finland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, Sweden and UK & Ireland.

In October, 2019, The New York Times announced that AMC Theaters was getting into streaming with it’s own on-demand movies subscription service.1 Hollywood’s five biggest movie studios — Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony, and Paramount — have made deals with AMC for catalog and new-release movies. The service, AMC Theaters On Demand, will offer about 2,000 films for sale or rent after their theatrical runs.
