Publishing is the production and distribution of written material to make it available to the public, most recognizable in news media, literature, and music, though the term also applies in video game production.

Authors may be, and thanks to publishing technology are increasingly, their own publishers. Publisher can be used to refer to the individual who leads a publishing company or the publishing company itself.

Traditionally, publishing refers the printed works of books and newspapers. With the advent of the internet, the scope of publishing has expanded to include digital with versions of books and periodicals available in electronic formats such as ebooks, as well as in websites and blogs.

Publishing includes the following stages of development: acquisition, marketing, copy editing, production, printing (and/or its online equivalents), and distribution.
