LinkedIn was founded by Reid Hoffman, along with Jean-Luc Vaillant, Konstantin Guericke, Allen Blue, and Eric Ly, in 2002, and was officially launched on May 5, 2003. Today, the social network is the world's largest professional network with more than 562 million users in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
Jeff Weiner is the CEO of the company, and management includes experienced executives from companies such as Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft, TiVo, PayPal and Electronic Arts. LinkedIn leads a diversified business with revenues from membership subscriptions, advertising sales and recruitment solutions.
In December 2016, Microsoft completed its acquisition of LinkedIn, bringing together the world’s leading professional cloud and the world’s leading professional network.
In November, 2018, LinkedIn announced that it expects media biz to bring in $2 billion in 2018 meaning the professional network site will bring in roughly half of Microsoft's $4.16 billion in ad revenue. LinkedIn says it generates more than 2 million posts, videos and articles in the feed per day, and close to 30 million brands, institutions and organizations, from small businesses to large enterprises, have Pages on LinkedIn. "Momentum in the consumer ecosystem is driving marketing solutions and ad revenue," said Tomer Cohen, VP of Products.
